Basic Rules of Video Poker - A Guide For Beginners
Video poker is a simplified version of online poker, so the rules are basic, and you won’t need much knowledge in order to succeed. All you really need to know to play are the hand rankings, as the various hands will determine your payout.
We’ll here go through the standard rules for video poker, but note that all versions of the game have different rules. So make sure you read the game rules, or check the paytable, before trying out a new game.
Card Deck
Video poker is usually played with a standard 52-card deck. However, some variants, like ‘Joker’s Wild,’ include additional cards such as a joker. The random number generator that’s used in online video poker will, virtually, shuffle the deck for each game round. This means that using strategies like card counting is impossible.
Hand Rankings
Traditional poker hand rankings are used in all standard video poker versions. From highest to lowest, these include:
- Royal Flush: A, K, Q, J, 10, all of the same suit.
- Straight Flush: Five consecutive cards of the same suit.
- Four of a Kind: Four cards of the same rank.
- Full House: Three cards of one rank and two cards of another.
- Flush: Five cards of the same suit, not in sequence.
- Straight: Five consecutive cards of different suits.
- Three of a Kind: Three cards of the same rank.
- Two Pair: Two pairs of cards of different ranks.
- One Pair: One pair of cards of the same rank.
Note that some versions have additional hands, or hands that are ranked differently from the standard.
Winning Hands
The minimum hand you can get to win depends on the game version. For example, in Jacks or Better, you won’t get a payout unless you get a hand equal to, or better, than one pair of Jacks. The better the hand you get, the more you’ll win. Some games also offer bonus payouts for specific four-of-a-kind hands or a Royal Flush achieved with a maximum bet.
Wild Cards
In some variants, specific cards are designated as wild, meaning they can substitute for any other card to form a winning hand. For example, in Deuces Wild, all deuces can replace any other card in your hand. If a joker is used in the deck, this as well is considered a wild card.
Betting
The betting limits in a video poker game depend on the minimum and maximum set by the game provider that created the game. Often, you’ll use credits while playing, which is a substitution for the chips used when playing “real” poker. Note that some games offer a higher payout multiplier if you bet the maximum number of credits per hand.
